About the Trans-Mississippi Golf Association

The Trans-Mississippi Golf Association is one of the oldest and most prestigious golf organizations in the United States. Established in 1901, the Trans-Miss is composed of over 200 member clubs located throughout the country.  The Association is governed by a board of independent directors and is headquartered in Lawrence, Kansas.

Our mission is to:

  • Promote and advance the true spirit of amateur golf by cultivating fellowship, harmony, friendly competition and cooperation among members of the association.
  • Conduct three annual tournaments – the Trans-Mississippi Amateur Championship, a summer competition inaugurated in 1901, the Trans-Miss Senior Championship, which began in 2000 and a fall Four-Ball tournament, which began in 1981.  All three championships rotate annually among the nation’s finest golf courses.
  • Cultivate and promote our Turf Scholarship Fund, which now grants $63,000 in educational scholarships each year to young men and women pursuing careers as golf course superintendents or in other areas of turf management at 21 universities across the U.S.
  • How the Trans-Miss Operates

The Trans-Miss is governed by a board of directors, which normally ranges from 30 to 36 directors.  Officers elected every two years are the president, executive vice-president, vice-president, secretary and treasurer, whom, with the immediate past president and legal counsel, are members of the Executive Committee.

In addition, there usually are more than 20 life directors who have served at least 10 years on the board, but have chosen to be less active.  The board normally meets three times annually: once each March, a summer session during the Championship and a fall meeting during the Four-Ball Championship.  Executive Committee meetings are conducted when necessary.  The board’s primary mission is to establish policy, but its members are also called upon to serve in a variety of capacities to run the association’s two tournaments.

Day-to-day administrative duties are carried out by a small staff at the association’s executive office located in Lawrence, KS.
